Description & Duties:

The Department of Horticultural Science is hiring two self-motivated, hardworking students to work as gardeners in the 1-acre Display and Trial Garden on the Saint Paul Campus of the UMN.  The garden has been an important and valuable part of the department since 1992. 

In this position, two undergraduate students will work closely with the garden manger to support and maintain the garden.  Work in the garden will include, but is not limited to, garden upkeep (weeding, planting, mulching, fertilizing, watering, greenhouse work, harvesting, and maintenance), interacting with the public (welcoming garden visitors, teachers, students, and tours; answering questions; and helping lead educational programs), and garden planning and promotion (garden design, photography, and social media updates). Student gardeners will work several hours a week with the Plant Growth Facilities staff. Gardeners will work part-time beginning, weather dependent, in May, with full-time work beginning at the end of the semester. Part-time work may also be available in the fall. 


Employment Details

  • Must be an undergraduate at the UMN*
  • Preference given to students in Plant Science, Food Systems or other horticultural majors
  • 10 hrs/wk late spring/early fall, 40hrs/wk summer.  Some weekend hours required
  • $10.00/hour


Required Qualifications:

  • Ability to follow directions
  • Ability to work cooperatively and independently
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs
  • Must be dependable and punctual
  • Enthusiasm and a willingness to learn
  • Basic understanding of plants and gardening
